It was slightly tongue-in-cheek. It’s not really very good English, or used in anything but pretty lowbrow environments. 
Is a ‘thingo’ something like a ‘dingo’ in OZ.

No, but there are certainly plenty of those dingo thingos around here.
They aren’t normally kept as pets, as they are not really domesticated. You need a license to have them. There’s a woman in our area who has some, and they sit by her on the deck of the local cafe as she sips coffee. Everyone quietly refers to her as the Dingo Lady.
