I think I could use some help. I have a non-commercial project about offroad cars. The idea is to let owners of a 4x4 car find similar 4WDs to see how they can be modified, what aftermarket parts are available and how these cars can look like after the modifications.
In order to let the database of owner cars and parts grow the community needs members. This is where it lacks at the moment. This platform is running since a bit more than a year and so far we got about 170 members. Not a lot considering having about 2000 to 3000 unique visitors per week.
What do you guys think does it lack in terms of UI/UX? Where does it fall short when it comes to send a clear message what it’s about and why to register? How could I get the message accross with better use of UI/UX?
In my humble opinion, the call to action is not obviously such - “become a mate” might just be a chance to post a photo or join a mailing list. Why not change it to “Free Membership Available Here!” or something similar and see how you get on.
I would consider putting the value proposition above the fold. There’s some explanation copy below after a few scrolls but I’d really like to know what this website is about right on top. That helps you filter out crowd because people who don’t care about the topic will bounce off the page immediately. Then you can focus on how you retain the ones that do stay back and read. Hope this helps
I am not into off-road cars, however I would look at updating the concept of being a “mate”. I just don’t think it translates very well for web. I see what you’re trying to do. The reason is I don’t want to be a “mate” of ppl I have only just met on the internet. That will come with time as I get to know ppl.
Also, I feel that the images up the top are too busy, I am unsure what to do, where to click. I would rather close the page.
The menu to the left (and under) the images lacks any context. The menu icon is there, however is it duplicating the top nav? If not, why do you have two complete separated navs? It is not good from useability perspective. Again, I’d rather close the page.
As another user aide, the Value Proposition is buried under the fold. I would move the picture of the guy and text up and alter the text to just say G’day (or at least test this - I’d just like to add, your market may not only be in Australia, so you may like to consider some ppl won’t know what mate means).
In short, you are trying to put everything out there. Your site needs to retain some element of mystery to encourage ppl to make the next step.
Another thing - the events list is a preview of an upcoming feature? Why show it to me. You make me read something (which is my time you are stealing) Only to apologies for it not being real? The fact you have an events calendar is not enough to make me convert.
Sorry there is a lot to go over here. If you want to have a Skype sometime send me a PM.
I am no expert, my landing page is in my sig block so judge me as you will.
Thanks guys for your comments and especially your suggestions. I’ve been a bit quiet as I am working a lot on a better version of the platform and be sure that I highly regard your feedback. One thing I have already regarded in Version 2 (which isn’t visible for anyone else but I can supply screenshots) is, that the main information about the platform are now in the upper fold (unless you’re already a member).
