Good apps/ways of developing html/css on a mobile phone

Hi

Does anyone know of any good apps/ways of developing html and css on your phone, ideally an iPhone but I will look to get a new one soon anyway so could easily change the model.

Sometimes, I’m on lunch/break/travelling to work/on holiday and could do with a way of just staying in touch with developing my programming skills. I keep finding that if I leave a program for say 2 days that I’ve forgotten what I was doing!! It just frustrating forgetting what I was doing and having to re-learn and keep the motiviation going.

Cheers

Matt

At first I thought you were asking for advice on how to code for a phone, but now I assume you are asking for advice on how to build sites using a phone? The best I can offer is that you load some ebooks on your phone and read them while away from the computer, or read articles about web design on your phone.

Jmatty,

You could try Nebulous Notes. Its basically a text editor but it allows you to write a lot of programming languages.

Combined with FTP on the go you could program and build a website from anywhere,

Hope that helps,

Shawn

Hi Shawn
These two apps sound ideal but is it possible to use just one app to write httml, css and do the downloading/uploading all in one. Also does either of these apps colour code the code you write or have an intellisense feature to save typing out the html?

I believe this is what you might be looking for. http://panic.com/dietcoda/

Hi Brandon
Thanks for recommending dietcode. But this is for the iPad whereas I only have a iPhone. Also its $19.99 which seems a lot to me.

To be honest, I wouldn’t want to code on an iphone. That sounds horrible. An iPad while on the move, yeah. But an iPhone? shudders

Firing up the app store on my phone and typing “html editor” into the search field reveals:

Espresso HTML (Free, 16 ratings @ 4.5 stars, looks alright)

There are a bunch more too.

Hi Fizix
There is going to be a slightly larger iPhone coming out in June 2013, from the latest I know called iPhonePlus. I may even settle for a Samsung phone next as they seem larger.
Unfortunately, my iPhone is quite an old as well so I’m limited for app selection due to the OS being old.
Thanks for your advice - I’ll take another look at the app store to see if anything is compatible

My point was, personally, I’d hate to develop on a smartphone. An iPad is the minimum size I’d use and even then it’s not ideal. But if you are happy then don’t let me stop you

That app I mentioned, I checked it out and it does the job.

Hi Fizix
Supposing I’m not at work and some very important users of you web-site encounter a fault where you’ve just updated that particular web-page.
In that situation, you could be anywhere, out shopping, at your relatives, at a football match. I think that having a mobile in this situation would be handy to just make a quick fix even if its a case of just reversing an update that you made a short while ago.
For my situation, I’m not a pro web-developer so the more hands on experience I can get actually make the difference between forgetting my skills or honing them to make them even better.
I might go for a Samsung though as the screens are massive compared to iPhones.

In reality, that’s not too likely, as you’ll have seen most or all bugs while testing the site. All the same, just because we have all this mobile connectivity doesn’t mean that patience and waiting are redundant.

Hi Ralph
In my case, I am trying to write my own website and the only tester is me so some problems won’t be realised until the Website goes Live or as I apply further updates (sometimes with very minimal testing). Due to fitting in all of life’s many other demands, it could sometimes take me 2 or 3 days to even gain access to a PC again. So this is why a mobile is the only convenient way to make the odd enhancement and keep building on my skills.
Cheers for now
Matt

You can test everything locally before going live.
