Can anyone shed some light on what it takes to accomplish the filter-sort mechanism of a site like devart.withgoogle.com
Is it possible to execute that sort of a system on wordpress or with any plugin or CMS?

well, I don’t think there is a readymade solution for this. You need a plugin, which alters the WordPress Query. Such an Plugin would be for example http://codecanyon.net/item/profi-search-from-a-detail-search-for-wordpress/6964843
But it doesn’t have these styles, but it would be a first step. Maybe you contact the programmer of that plugin. He might be able to help.
