I ned to set up two ecommerce web sites for my fabric store and am looking for a web hosting site for this and an interactive/informational site as well (filling in forms and printing them). I have surveyed the offerings on the internet and have come away with mostly questions. What is the forums opinion of InMotionHosting.com? Are they what they say they are? Etc,etc. Or do you have any other suggestions for ecommerce sites. I am looking at using shared space initially. Or do I need to go with a virtual server. Any sugestions would be greatly apreciated. Also, I am new at creating web sites. jb
Based on what you have mentioned, you should go with shared hosting. Unfortunately, I do not an opinion for In Motion Hosting, but you should look for features like an uptime and money back guarantee.
This should ensure that your website is online nearly 24/7 and if for some reason you dislike the service, you have a way out of the service with getting your money back.
Also, hosting providers that have ecommerce applications available is plus.
Since you are new, you will want to ensure that the provider you go with have readily available support in case you run into any questions or issues. Good luck on your search and with your new online venture.
Look in the Review a Host board to see what other members say about them.
If you’re going to build an e-commerce website, please make some decisions up front:
-
Will you need a secure server? You will for an e-commerce website but ONLY if you are taking payment details yourself, i.e., many payment gateways will take the credit card details on their secure server and e-mail you the accounting details. PayPal is okay, too, as they will give you immediate feedback - IF you’re good with PHP.
-
A secure server will require a dedicated IP address. Normally, this is not available with shared hosting (sometimes it is, though, so look carefully).
-
Shared servers share more than the web host - they can put you on blacklists if a spammer holds an account on the same server.
-
VPS are more expensive but give you the power you probably won’t need for quite a while. Be sure to get a “managed VPS” unless you have the knowledge, experience and can monitor your VPS 24/7/365.

I would suggest specific shared web hosting. Webhosting which is designed exactly for your software. That will guarantee you good and smooth work of your software and at the same time that will help you save some funds.
I consider there to be 3 levels of hosting for the most part:
- Shared
- VPS
- Dedicated
(cloud and fit into all 3)
If you are just starting the site, there is not much wrong with shared. As you get bigger, do VPS first. Dedicated is rarely needed, and a small dedicated is weaker than most VPS.
I did a site search of Web Hosting Talk
site:webhostingtalk.com inmotionhosting
Based on my initial assessment, I would say you could do better.
I like Arvixe for shared and Servint for VPS, but there are many “good” choices out there. You especially want to avoid the bad choices obviously.
I would have to suggest shared hosting if this site is brand new. There is no need to pay the extra costs for VPS and dedicated servers until the site is actually big enough to require those types of resources.
Yes I will suggest you to google the company reviews on google to get a better idea.
I believe that is better update as soon a s you grow. Start with SPECIFIC for your web application hosting. yes specific (recommended) then update as soon as you grow.
I think even you are getting started with your ecommerce project that is recommended to start with low end VPS. Not because of space and bandwidth limits or similar limits but because of processor time and RAM usage. You are going to run web application and processor time is as important as space and bandwidth.
I suggest reading the definitions of each at: http://www.winworld.com/hosting-types.html
IT’s what I used to understand which one to use.
