Does Google Adwords location targeting work in the UK?

Earlier this year Google added the ability for UK users to be able to define an area within the UK for an Adwords campaign to show. However I have read that this does not work well here in the UK due to the way broadband networks are connected giving false results.

I mainly deal with nationwide advertsing but recently a client has tried this and has had unusual results in trying to define a 30 mile area just south of Birmingham. He has had enquiries from Cardiff, over another 30 miles away!

Has anyone else much experience with this?

Yes it does but it can also limit the size of the campaign as Google can’t sort out exactly where everyone is from. If you get too limited you risk additional business but local advertising is a powerful force and Google offers a good solution to get into it.

Well my ISP has their servers located in London and I’m on the south coast so I know exactly how this can be problematic. I honestly wouldn’t bother with regional advertising because all Google have to go on is wherever your ISP has their servers housed (as that’s where the IP address trail will lead them). In the UK ISP’s have their equipment loaded all over the place so just using a UK specific set of keywords would likely grab the equal (if not more) people from a particular region as if you tried to go by region. If every ISP has their servers all over the country, guessing where those customers are from is precisely that… random guessing.

It does, but dont be too targeted because you will really reduce the amount of people you reach.
