Charging people for Wordpress Themes

Hi, I am new to web design and have come across Wordpress.

How does it work in terms of charging clients? So say if I found a theme on the wordpress.org page, that was free. Am I able to take this theme and edit it (in terms of colour scheme, slight layout changes) and charge a prospective client for it?

I am far from charging clients at the moment as I am still learning, but I was just curious as to how people work and charge clients in this field?

Thanks in advance

yes alot of web designers do that , take a theme modify it abit and sell the resulting web design to the client. It makes designing a website much quicker than doing it all from scratch.

You better read the theme’s license terms carefully. Some creators of themes allow you to do anything you want with them including selling them. Others have restrictions on what you can do such as prohibiting you from modifying or selling them.

Ok cheesdude thanks for that, where would I find this information? Also I have been told that if I want to change a wordpress theme i need to look at the API? Or am I making this up?

Look for a readme or license file within the theme’s files or some sort of licensing information from where ever you download it from.

So I have found the terms and conditions of the themegrill website where the theme can be downloaded for free and this is what it says:

Licensing
All of our themes are licensed under the GNU general public license (http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html). You are free to modify our themes for personal or commercial projects as you wish to fit your purposes. You are allowed to use our themes at as many websites as you like but support shall only be provided for any one of your site. Please read and follow the terms of GPL.

So can people charge for a theme that has been edited by themselves on this one?

Thanks in advance

AFAIK, yes, but others can take your modified version, modify themselves, and sell it as well.

Mittineague- thanks for clearing that up, just so I know for the future!

Also what does AFAIK mean?

Sorry, I often assume everyone knows the acronyms I use
As Far As I Know

I have been known to have been in error once before :shifty:
