Best BOOK? Help

Hi,

Finally I’ve decided to go with PHP, it’s everywhere. However, now I need a good book to start with. I need a really good one!

A good start would be:
Build Your Own Database Driven Web Site Using PHP & MySQL

Then: The PHP Anthology: 101 Essential Tips, Tricks & Hacks, 2nd Edition

What else rather than sitepoint books?

How about you go to Amazon and do a search?

Honestly, I have to agree that Kevin Yank’s book (the one suggested in 1st reply) is one of the best starter books, if not the best book.
It’s easy to read, understand and it gives you the insight in how things work and cooperate together.
You won’t make a mistake by buying it, hands down.

I found Larry Ullman’s PHP books to be really clear, definitely recommended.

Cheers,

Jon

Depends on your level of programming experience, your learning style, etc…

What if I never did any programing before?

What you really need is practice. You said you know HTML and CSS, so you know how that learning this stuff is a lot of trial and error; you make your edits, press F5 and see how it looks. We experiment, and it’s not time wasted because we learn in the process.

Don’t let the perfect be the enemy of the good! If you’re concerned about spending money on books that don’t work out, spend some time on the free tutorials that are all over the web. There are even some books that are out of print and that have been made free in PDF form on the web. Download one of those and play around.

Once you go as far as the tutorials will take you, then you’ll be better able to skim through a book and see if too basic or too advanced, or to read an Amazon review and understand why the review writer liked the book. Good luck!

Are you a PHP developer?

No, not really. I’ve programmed in various languages, but PHP is pretty new to me.

Bobby,

Don’t feed the troll. CS_Dweeb is wasting your time; don’t encourage him. Read back thru his recent threads and posts if you doubt it…
