Assessing .mobi viability

I have several .mobi domain names, focused generic domains.

Traffic wise, the two I have developed (xhtml) I think have just pretty much maintained traffic over the past two years. But my efforts are a far cry from enough to go on.

Anyone have a handle on this? Is the growth sector mainly for internet banking/finance? What other areas are showing the growth?

Mobile is an exploding area and all signs point to this just being the start of the trend. Between the iphone, blackberry and a host of other devices people are getting online more on the go and as prices drop, more will join them, technology will improve and usage rates will increase. Growth is across the board from casual gaming to productivity to personal finance.

People like being connected to everything, the reason for the growth is because proper web browsers are being included in cell-phones (before it used to be a heavily reduced WML site, no good at all) and also with unlimited data plans being offered it’s essentially opened the market up to watching TV, movies, music, social networking, general browsing (etc) on a device you can take with you everywhere. Though on a side note, I wouldn’t bother with .mobi domains, most websites these days can be adapted to work on cell phone devices through a mobile subdomain or stylesheet usage… the mobi extension has no public awareness (generally speaking), the terms of usage are VERY restrictive and it’s an unnecessary TLD for the general website owner.
