Have you guys tried Zoints Local yet?
I looked at this script and questions why it would be useful to create a site like this one. I don’t doubt the effort and some pretty graphics but the concept didn’t really work for me. It seemed more about connecting forums than true functionality of a single community site. Maybe things have changed but it had that vbulletin hack square clunkiness.
which is better for me
phpfox or hacked vBulletin? or invision?
I saw this one using a phpfox Integrated with vBulletin.

BTW, to Kat:
Would you like to sell me your site’s code?
Is it still available for other common vB hacks?
Zoints Local realy interests me.
Is it a mod for vBulletin?
Is a zoints local hacked vBulletin available for other hacks?
Hi Slinky! Long time, no see.
Are you leaning towards any particular script these times?
I’m still hoping that the new datemill will be my answer.
hey everyone,
I want to say thanks for all the great information. Well i need some quick help/advice. I’m currently doing a class project of making a website. My group wants to make a social networking site that has a calendaring feature where people can put down there workout schedule and other people will be able to look for them based on their workout time, so you could have a buddy to workout with.
I have purchased a host server: www.bluehost.com thinking I was going to use Joomla and community builder but this is very confusing and i don’t know if in the end it will do what i want.
Here is waht I need:
- Your normal editable member profile
- a calendar for each user that can be searched
what software could i use?
It can be installed on any forum software at this point. However, the integration wrapper has only been written for vBulletin at this point (so you would need to integrate it yourself if you ran other software). But rumor has it a phpbb2 version will be out soon
Zoints Local is very configurable. It add an enormous amount of functionality, interaction and content to a community. Personalized homepage, blog, networking, and quite literally whatever else you can dream up because adding additional pages and blocks is easy.
Additional blocks are now starting to be developed and shared at http://dev.zoints.com – once that community gets a foothold, then the amount of configuation options for Zoints Local will be infinite.
Zoints Local is a script that integrates with any forum software out there. Right now, we’ve only written the integration code for vBulletin, but phpbb, smf, and others will be forthcoming.
In essense, running a quality niche social network is about to cost however much you pay for hosting if you use a free forum solution and Zoints Local.
Hey guys, GREAT thread, extremely helpful. Im still kind of confused though, lol. The site Im trying to make is kind of a mixture o MySpace and an Image Rating script. Im really not sure what type of script I should be using…social networking, CMS or some sort of advanced image rating type script. Maybe some of you could make a good suggestion for me…
Heres what I want the user profiles to look like and do: http://img358.imageshack.us/img358/9448/sitemockupsb8.gif
So the basic features are…
-Social networking, creating “friends”
-Messaging other members
-User profiles w/ pictures
-Image rating/blogging feature (the ‘show off’ section)
–Optional polls
–Image thumbnail
–Tags
-Referral system
-Profile questionaire
-User search function
But i need a script that is unencrypted (becuase I’ll probably add on as I go along) and the look needs to be extremely customizable. I wouldn’t mind a script that comes close to this and can be edited by a coder to fit my vision exactly. Also, my budget: up to $300.
Any suggestions??
PHPFox has all of those, except the Tags - which there’s a Mod for.
There’s a write up here on the launch of elgg spaces which offers hosting for elgg based communities.
http://blogs.zdnet.com/social/?p=17
I’m totally sold on these guys.
Looks interesting, but it could get quite pricey if your community takes off. Plus if the company goes out of business, your community goes ‘poof’.
Heh. I’m hosting my own. I’m sold on the software. Since the setup can be formidable the free hosted option is a great way to try it out.
Thanks for the tip on elgg spaces. Well worth a look.
How many concurrent users? What kind of server?
I have been working on adding SN features for phpBB. Here is an example profile from my test board (note it is multimedia heavy):
http://www.adminsphere.com/forums/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=4
You can look around at some of the other example profiles on the test forum. Just ignore any debug messages.
I’ve looked at some similar discussions on vbulletin.org and I think that adapting forum software to have SN features could be a good option. A lot of code that is used by forums can be shared with an SN script.
Nice work!
Has anyone tried the new PHPFox yet? Any reviews?
Well of course
So far it’s nearly bug free (even in beta1)
MUCH faster
The code is clean, OOP, which makes it much easier to create “mods”.
The Templating system is obviously much easier to work with since they’ve started using Smarty…
AndI just got word that Beta 2 is out tomorrow and if all goes well - RC1 should be released VERY SOON!
What does anyone know about Community Server?? It looks sort of interesting (even though it lacks a ‘groups’ feature…) I don’t even mind that it has to run on a windows server…
Also, can someone sum up for me, the problems (if any) with PHPFox? Of all the sns platforms, this is the one that seems to have all the features I need (including vb integration), but it’s hard for me to sort through what are genuine problems and what are just ‘platform bashers’.
