EMail Client

What's the best thing nowadays to read your email with?

What do people think about Thunderbird?

I really like Outlook. Do you have anything against it?

No, not really!

However, it is interesting to see what other people are using and whether they recommend it, especially if it is free.

I'm an Outlook fanatic, mainly because it's got mail, calendar, contacts, notes, and for me, a journal, and NewsGator all in one package.

Edit:

Just for clarity's sake, I suppose it's worth noting that when I mentioned the journal in Outlook 2003 above, I meant that I actually use the feature as a journal, or diary, depending on your terminology. Not great as far as privacy goes, but I'm the only one that uses the PC, so...

/use Firefox+Thunderbird0.5

I'm using Thunderbird since 0.3 and I'm happy with it.
I can use both under Linux too.

I use Outlook in Windows and Evolution in Linux. I really dislike having different little programs to have email, calendar, address book, tasklist, and other PIM information available.

Haven't even looked at Thunderbird because it doesn't offer what I want which is more than email.

I use Microsoft Outlook Express to check the email, all the mails data are stored on the seperate hard-drive.

I have seen latest version of Thunderbird, it is nice email client, I have no plan moving to new email client yet.

Note: When you say "Outlook" are you referring "Outlook Express" or "Outlook 2000/XP/2003".

I, personally, am referring to Outlook XP. I will probably be upgrading to Outlook 2003 in 3 months.

Same here.

Tried Outlook XP, but found it was too bloated for my needs (and too slow on my computer). I didn't need half of its features, so I quickly switched over to Thunderbird. I'm using it for all my e-mail accounts now. Absolutely loving it!

I should really get busy with Thunderbird. I, also, only need email, but I'm too stuck on OE6. Though I've made a permanent switch to Firefox so maybe the time is now for Thunderbird. I used Eudora for a long time too, which has a really nifty attachments manager setting.

Has Thunderbird updated its filters/message rules capabilitiies? I seem to remember that's why I only used it for a few days before switching back to OE6...

OK, I just want to put a quick vote in for OE6... I just found a very shibby new feature which I'm loving. If like me, you check your POP (not IMAP) email in a variety of places, you may get a little irritated having to use webmail in order that messages are stored on the server so that, for example, when you get home, you can still download them as hard copies to your main computer.

Anyway, OE6 has a very nifty "Store a copy of messages on server" feature, which is all well and good, except for the fact that if you check your email through the day and delete things (for example reply notifications from SPF) - you don't want to then download them again when you get home and have to figure out what needs deleting. Anyways, I just found the "Remove from server when emptied from deleted items folder" option which works like an absolute little beauty. Byebye webmail!

Edit:

It even remembers which ones it's already downloaded and left a copy off on the server.. I know this is a little thing... but I'm quite impressed...

With thunderbird (0.3...lol but with FreeBSD5.2.1 I had that version in the default precompiled packages.. ) you have:
X1 Leave messages on server
---X1.1 Delete messages on the server when they are moved or deleted from Inbox
---X1.2 Delete messages on server after X days

I'm using option 1 and 1.1, not sure if it was improved in the 0.5 version ( I'd need to reboot to windoze...so can't tell exactly )

Story Juice: what's webmail ?

Hmm Getting back to the subject of Thunderbird here...

I downloaded it and "installed" it. The application is a little bulky for only doing email but if you have broadband the download is quick enough. Initial setup was quick, though a Windows Installer would be handy as well.

I found installing extensions to be a pain though, Firefox continually intercepted installation calls so now I have a calendar in my web browser, where I really do not need it nor did I want it. Firefox would not allow me to simply download the extension and install it in Thunderbird later.

Overall, it is a fairly quick email client with a lot of configuration options, it doesn't seem to integrate with other mozilla products well though as demonstrated by the extension installation problems. Maybe this will be fixed in later versions. Until then, it doesn't allow basic enhancements that would be needed for it to become a standard application on my PC's. I might use it on a Laptop though but not really sure.

I should add, it would be nice if the Gecko engine was centrally installed and then each application such as Thunderbird, FireFox and any others could simply access that installation instead of each of them carrying the engine within their application structure. This would make a the resulting applications a lot less bulky and easier to deal with.

I use PocoMail (www.pocomail.com). I love it with one exception, the address book. But according to posts on their forum, they are working on improvement for the next version.

I liked Outlook but it got nutzo about half a year ago so I moved to Eudora. I'm not really picky, I just need an email client. Though Thunderbird sounds interesting...

Talking

What? No votes for Pine yet? Seriously, it's useful for getting mail from remote locations...

Most of the time though, its Outlook for me. Sync'ing with my Palm Pilot that just works. Although, I have used Mozilla Mail on occasion, particularly when trying to put together HTML emails with pretty tables! (I'm not talking graphics, just simple rational alignment of a few numbers in a few columns!)

I use Thunderbird. If you just need email I HIGHLY reccomend it. I started using it in .02 when I started running my own mail server and realized 1) how superior IMAP is and 2) how bad OE/OEE are with IMAP. Plus the built in Junk Mail filter is really good. I have been training it for ~ 4 months and its very good now.

Thunderbird does leave a little to desire. Especially in the filtering code. I use Spam Assassin on my server and the built in TB bayesian filter, but I can't do some pretty basic things. For example - I have a message filter that moves every message with the X-Spam Flag set to YES moved to my Junk IMAP folder (I know this could be done with Maildrop but it always breaks its easier this way) but I can't have it mark it as Junk in its system and update the filter. This means that about once every 2-3 days when I remember I go to my Junk folder and do Ctrl+A (Select All) and then 'J' (Mark as Junk) and it takes 3-5 minutes to download and analyze all those messages to update the bayesian filter.

Small complaints and I'm sure by the time it is released (1.0) all these issues will be addressed. Remember FireFox and Thunderbird are pre-release software - they do have bugs!

What's the difference between POP and IMAP?

I use Thunderbird because I just want email, I've got Outlook XP but it's too bulky for what I'm after.

Outlook 2003...I like the new interface. Using it with SpamBayes but still don't trust it enough to delete the spam folder without scanning the messages to make sure they're not important.

Outlook 2003 comes with HTML message images off by default, and won't let you attach/view certain file types no matter what you do. I tried sending a small .exe install program to my wife and it refused to attach it. No way around it either, per the help files.

Only thing I don't like is that it's been freezing when downloading emails with a different charset. Then I have to log into webmail and clear them out....10 times a day Thanks spammers.
