Preface

You know something about websites, do you? Already conquered that “HTML” thang, huh? Got a grasp on CSS? Good. Well did you know that a properly formed website could beat the unliving tar out of a horde of the undead? Did you know that websites accounted for ninety-seven percent of zombie second-deaths in the last twenty-two years? You find that hard to believe? Well, let me drop some knowledge on your finely-combed head. We’re at war and you are our last hope to stave off the apocalypse. Now let’s take down some zombies.

Zombies Fill the Specific Ocean

Pseudo classes are aspects of an element. They may include where the element appears in an order of elements, whether the mouse is currently hovering over an element, whether a zombie visited a link already, or whether an element is empty.

Pseudo Zombie Classes

Beyond classifications, there are some times when you need to inject (or capture) pseudo elements. These shouldn't be used for adding content because they won't be available to screen readers, but they can be lifesavers when fighting zombies and trying to make your page look awesome.

There are a number of combinators and other modifiers that can change how a selector works, just like there are a number of ways to modify a baseball bat for maximum zombie damage.

Selecting Greatness

Another important part of positioning is not just the x- and y-axes, but also the z-axis. For those unfamiliar with the mathematical term z-axis, think about how many zombies you could stack one on top of the other. This stacking order is similar to the z-index, allowing you to move elements (or zombies) back and forth in the stack to create different stacking orders. (If x and y are horizontal and vertical on the screen, z is the direction perpendicular to both, coming out of the screen toward or away from you.)

For approximately the first twenty years of the web, we were stuck with about eight fonts, most of them sturdy and hard-working but far from comprehensive. It's like if you could only see the ROY G BIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet) of the rainbow and none of the colors around or in between them. (Maybe the lack of color perception is making the zombies angry.) Each of those colors is great, but we can lose a lot, like brown and chartreuse and peachpuff, if we only get those seven.

Just like you can choose where and when to take on the horde, you can choose which medium your styles apply to. Most of the time, it’ll be on the screen, but people still like to print web pages, so setting styles to ensure that things print nicely is ideal. Otherwise, they’ll waste time and ink on that ad or that poorly lit photo I insist on using as my profile picture.
