So basically I’m a 17 year old guy, and as soon as I turn 18 I wanna start my own webdesign company.
So… I gonna work alone, what I do is that, here in Sweden, we have a website with all swedish companys listed, and their emails… So I copy them and send the same email to alot of companys… And I usually get atleast one reply that they are interested in getting their website done.
To my question…
So when I start my company it’s gonna be named KWP Webdesign (KWP is just my name, Kevin Willads Petersen).
And right now, I have my website called http://www.kwpwebdesign.se and the name of the website is Kwpwebdesign, and as you can see there is a “About Me” page, a “Portfolio” page, and a “Contact” page…
Is it best for me to use kwpwebdesign and have the portfolio in there or rename my website to for example, only my name, and make that as a portfolio instead of a company website?
I would recommend keeping your portfolio under your company and therefore also under the Kwpwebdesign.se site.
Most web design companies do maintain a ‘current projects’ or ‘featured sites’ section, so I would encourage you to consider laying out your portfolio in this manner. As time persists and you take on more projects, you either add to or change the portfolio work with the paid work (only if it is worth highlighting).
The smart thing you did was to not just use your name directly as the company name because it can be challenging to brand a multi-person company under a single ‘Real Name’.
I take your advice, and keep my kwpwebdesign.se, inside that my portfolio.
Another thing, my website contains of as you can see, the start page, about me page (where I basically in the first couple of lines tell what I do, and underneath where it says “Lite mer om mig…” is more detailed about me… The portfolio page, where I put all my work in, and last the contact page. Do I miss anything?
About what I quoted, I’m not sure what you mean, probably because my English isnt the best, so If you could try to re-write it so I can understand it or more detailed I would be so glad.
In English, that should really be “KWP Web Design”, as "web and “design” are separate words.
It’s not totally clear what you are asking here, but your site is fine, I think. It is a good idea to have the portfolio page, and I’d say keep the domain you have.
You site is a good start. You don’t need to put too much in it to, when you begin. People that hire you will notice that you are a small (boutique) shop, so you don’t need to look like anything more.
Most design companies have a portfolio page. Your student portfolio page will be fine to begin. Later when you do more business sites you can update this same portfolio page.
If you have any designs you did in school then use those. If you don’t have any projects from school or web training, if you have anything interesting that you have done for yourself then select those things that will you think a larger amount of people will like/understand. If you don’t have any of these things then only put the current web project. The point of this is that others can see your work and decide if they want to hire you, so make choices that support this idea.
Keep the same idea going as the WBM link on the home page. Beside it were you have ‘Tillfällig bild’, if you do not have other work to show then consider putting concept work in these areas, so people can see your design style.
Maybe also create a title with a small paragraph of text like:
"
Our Work
Ill add the text there, “These are featured KWP Designs.” but in swedish, thanks for the idea.
And the idea is to put my four best works on the startpage, when I’ve done 4 works for 4 big companys, do you still think I should put conceptual work in my portfolio?
And with conceptual work, do you mean like, made a banner for nike, as an example?
When you say the grey text, do you mean on the contact page?
Kevin, I wish you much luck in web development business. You choose the company name, and the first criterion is: if you like it. The version you mentioned in my opinion is not very optimal, because the only purpose of that abbreviation is to present your name. This tells much to you, but it is not that important for your potential customers. I’d suggest to fine a name that easier to remember and sounds well. Some 10+ years back I called my company <snip>, and I don’t regret at all.
<snip>
I’m personally using a company name instead of just my full name, and I believe that this is a mistake I made. Most clients prefer a more personal approach, and you might have a little more success using your full name and making your site a portfolio, rather than a company’s site.
