I want to get my feet wet with .NET (in C#) development. It seems like nobody here is hiring entry-level .NET developers although there’s always a need for mid-level and up .NET developers. And I live in a town of around 3 million so there’s no real lack of web dev jobs to look through. Is the window for for entry-level .NET developers quickly closing?
What website are you using? Or, are you using the Local Newspaper?
Dice, Monster, and Craigslist.
I don’t even bother with the city’s newspapers- nobody puts up job ads for web and IT-related services there anymore.
Some other options would be SimplyHired, Indeed, CollegeRecruiter.
When you say you want to get your feet wet with c# and .net, how much experience do you have? Have you had a .net job yet? Also, how did you learn .net? School? Self-taught? If you graduated from a university, quite often they have alumni services which can help you find an entry level job. Joining a .net user group in your area can also help you learn what all is out there. Another option would be to contact a recruiter or headhunter.
I wouldn’t completely ignore the newspaper option. In washington DC, programming jobs are routinely listed in the newspaper.
They’re definitely out there, as I applied for at least five after uni and got interviews for all of the roles.
Some companies do have their own channels that they advertise jobs on, so it may be worth snooping out places that you know work with .NET and simply email them asking if they have any vacancies available.
Yeah, I agree w/ you on that there’s definitely less entry job compare to mid/senior level. Still, this is to be expected. Within 1~3 years, you’ll be in mid level entry as well. However, I have seen some entry level job. Typically, I find this kind of job on a new project who’s hiring 5~10 people at a time.
I’m not fresh out of college, though. I’m a PHP developer for 4 years and would like to switch to something different and try it out. Still haven’t seen those jobs that say “No C# or .NET experience? No problem! If you know at least one other back end development language and framework, we’ll be able to bring you up to speed.” Yes, learning on the job needs to come back into style.
I haven’t done any work with C# or .NET. I would like a job that will ease me into C# learning in my first weeks of working there. This is what I mean by entry-level. As a PHP OOP developer, I will leverage my knowledge of programming to move to C# and the .NET framework at the job.

I’ve been in the industry for four years so while I’m not a senior developer yet, I’m not completely green either. “entry level” doesn’t necessarily mean your first job right out of college, it can also mean your first job doing ____.
