What is design trend? What is current design trend? How many design trend were there till date? How important is it for a freelance graphic designer?

Well, it’s a trend. Just like there are fashion trends. movie trends, or how MySpace was a trend.

I don’t think there is any way to quantify how many trends there have been to date, because it’s kind of an abstract idea. Depending on what you’re designing should determine how trendy your design should be.

Are you designing a logo for a Brick Manufacturer? Then your design should follow some of the good ideas set by the current trends, but should also be timeless and shouldn’t look insane 100yrs from now (literally).

Are you designing a site for a restaurant that plays live music and is frequented by 20-somethings? You should make the hippest, trendiest thing you can possibly come up with. Because if starts looking outdated, it will probably be redesigned.

Take your avatar here for instance. The style used there, the 3D bubbly metallic stuff (sorry I don’t know the name), was trendy between 2004-2007 or so. Around about the time Vista was around. Today, it’s more about Flat and Material designs.

Will flat and material designs be popular next year? Maybe. Will they be popular 5yrs from now? Could be. 10yrs? Probably not. But the ideas and the design principles it set will probably stick around forever in future trends and have been around for a long time.
