So, I was wondering if there is any valid, by which I mean non vendor-specific css, method to rotate text with css ?

It’s really all at the vendor-specific stage right now, so far as I know. It’s a part of CSS3 that is still in development. And there are filters for IE, but again, that’s not really what you are asking for.
