It’s because the limit on the number of replies was introduced (by Discourse) after the last-but-one post was made, and didn’t run retrospectively. When a new post was created, the auto-close kicked in because the topic was over the limit.
Aaaaaaaah! Okay. So it was a recent change by Discourse, and someone triggered the closing by posting in there?
