Time for me to confess that I truly hate "Responsiveness"

Am I the only one that think that, for the most, all this thing about mobile friendly websites is a step backward?
Computers started with small screens and evolved into big beatutiful screens. Now humanity returned to small screens for some reason. Yes, I obviously know that this is why it’s called “mobile”… you can now view the web even on a tram with your small cellphone… but I still find this trend to be somehow “stupid”, without offence.

The best invention right now would be this (IMHO):

(this is the mascotte of my personal website - I commissioned the design something like 4 years ago)

A simple lightweight computer attached to the human body, as an extension (you can remove it, if you want LOL). But imagine a computer like that completely made with a laser projector. Shouldn’t we progress and concentrate in this direction instead of remaining on “small screens”?

Check this (I get the idea after viewing this LOL):

The good news is, big screens are still available, I like big screens too.
And mobiles are not compulsory. :grinning:

You should try building a prototype of this and marketing it. :wink:

Actually, although I’m sure the tiny screens of mobile devices are here to stay, and need to be considered when developing a website, I still prefer the experience of the large screen.

I saw something the other day that is worn on the wrist, and projects a screen up your arm. I can’t recall whether it was intended to be serious or not, but that sort of sounds like the same kind of idea. If I spot it again (likely, as I’m sure it was on Facebook), I’ll post a link.

Can you imagine the media queries?

Arms come in all sizes, a responsive nightmare.

With mobile users now making approximately 50% of web usage and growing, frankly I would say no. Ignoring them would be backwards IMO.

Mid sized devices are still very popular in the from of laptops and tablets and I would agree that they are much more useful and better to work with than a small mobile. But for many everyday activities, I would not want to be burdened down with anything bigger than a pocket sized device. This I believe is why mobiles are so popular, people carry them everywhere, all the time, you just wouldn’t do that with a larger device, as your video shows. :smiley:
I don’t think this trend is going to change any time soon.

An interesting idea that could be useful in some cases. But I don’t see it replacing phone screens, though it could be added as a secondary display mode. For one it needs an interface to replace touch screen. You would need something to project onto, and that wouldn’t work well outdoors in daylight. Also in some circumstances you may not want your work, personal messages or whatever, projected on the wall for everyone to see.
But whatever direction(s) technology takes, with such a wide variety of devices and displays, RWD is becoming more of a must to make the web work for everyone, regardless of their preferred device.
Making the web a standardised fixed size is not the future, I’m sure.

Yes, I agree with you. We just can’t ignore them. But think about the future. Sometimes cartoons are right in their parodies:

Do you dislike responsiveness because you find it difficult, Norman?

The thing with small screens is they are convenient. The fact that they fit in your pocket and you can check out a website virtually wherever you are can be important for some people.

Personally I don’t like the way mobile phones are getting bigger. I like my phone to fit in my pocket without giving me a walk like John Wayne. :smile:

So love it or hate it, you can’t afford to ignore responsive design!

BTW your English is very good. I only wish my Italian was half as good!

Yes, but don’t forget the present just yet. I’m still adding hacks to make sites display on IE8, so I’m not dropping support for small mobiles yet!

Agreed, no need to excuse it.

Sincerely I tried less than 20 times to browse the internet using my phone. When I tried, I found it a really bad and stressing experience… so, what can I say? I just don’t like it! I prefer to wait to go home and power on my Mac so I can see what I want with a big monitor (two monitors, for me, to be true :smiley:), a mouse and a keyboard. When I’m out I prefer to interact with people. This is why I don’t even have an internet connection on my phone (I mean with a special offer or those type of things).

I also made this thread because I thought: “Why we just don’t merge all these things togheter (which for me would be the most sane thing to do) and proceed from there on?”. From my point of view, we are instead focusing on the different aviable solutions… and this is okay, don’t get me wrong… but to me, I repeat, it seems that we are doing it “too much”… instead of what we should really do to in order to go forward with technology. We should focus more on the future of “usability”.

Just think it this way:

cellphone:
pro = internet everywhere
cons = small size, no usability (I don’t know if this is the right term in this situation)

computer:
pro = big size, usability
cons = no portable

What’s there in the middle? Yeah, tablets and portable computers… but just imagine something that can let us create a fusion of all the betters of these technologies into a new beautiful “program”. This is why I thought about laser technology. I seen a lot of movies…

… movies where (yeah, you can tell me “go slow with imagination!”) the laser technology is used with sense. Which was the name of that film with Robert Downey Jr.?

Again, I know that, imagination and future… things created with computers… a long road to be done before we can concretize it, but now we can discuss it. So why not. :smile:

Anyway, we could have the best of both, and that’s what we should try now to research.

Thank you! :smile:
If you will ever need some help with Italian just shoot me a PM!

I wrote that sentence because sometimes (even if I still use a lot Google Translate) I really don’t know if what I wrote is written in a correct english or not! So sometimes my subconsicus force me to “warn in advance” the readers. :smile:

I agree, I much prefer a proper mouse, keyboard and monitor (or two). I’m not a fan of mobile browsing, I generally have my phones data connection off because I just don’t need it most of the time. Though I will connect if I need to, and more often use wifi if available. But there is generally nothing too urgent that it can’t wait until I’m near a proper computer. I may use the phone to read Emails, use the odd app, or look something up occasionally. I wouldn’t consider using it for any real work.
But the thing is, that’s not typical of most people.
For many computers or the net are not for serious work, its for leisure, entertainment, social and shopping etc. They are the consumers, not the creators. So a simple device fits their needs.

That may be due to a lack of responsiveness. Or if they were responsive sites, the experience would have been a lot worse if they were not, I’m sure.

It’s good to speculate about what the future holds, and even better to try and shape it, but I think that’s a different subject to RWD. I don’t see RWD as the cause of bad mobile experiences, but the cure for it.

Yes, I must admit that I really generalized a lot with the term “Responsiveness” here. I agree with you when you say this:

completely.

I totally agree with you. I dont like big ass screens that I cant fit into my pocket or purse. ew mobile phones of today have screens of sizes such that you cant hold them in your palm, but they are nowhere in comparison to the laptop or tv screens.
