The trace tool will not help you if you do not know how to use the pen tool. The results you can accomplish with a trace tool are not optimal, hence you’d end up doing plenty of refinements anyway which means you can as well just start from scratch.
Like Ralph said, the pen tool is mandatory. You cannot work without it.

Once you imported your logo image in illustrator, click on it, then on top toolbar choose “Live Trace” option. Don’t click it as it will convert your image to vector by default settings, instead click on little “arrow down” sign next to it and pick “Tracing option”.
In window that you will open, you have several options and presets, feel free to experiment until you get best result.

Have you used the pen tool in Ps? That uses vectors (as I understand). I’m more used to Ai than Ps. Vectors make much more sense to me.
I have simple logo I’m trying to convert from psd to vector format,# and I’ve never used illustrator and have.no idea how it works. But I know from friend that what I’m looking to do is quite easy
