That depends entirely on your needs.

Discourse, which is what this forum is built on, is excellent. If you just need a small forum attached to a WordPress site that already exists, just go with that. Also you need to take into account how many users you’ll have, monetary and technical resources, whether you’ll have to run and modify it yourself, and if so, what language it’s developed in… etc.

Hi @cadcae,

The most popular WordPress forum plugin is bbPress, see this article for more info:

http://www.sitepoint.com/wordpress-forum-with-bbpress/

As a WordPress plugin, bbPress has tight integration with WordPress out of the box (check out http://support.advancedcustomfields.com/forums/ if you want to compare to the default). It’s a lot simpler than the more advanced forum platforms, but it’s still quite powerful and very easy to get up and running.

If you’re looking at a standalone forum, as @jeffreylees says Discourse is a good option. It is a very different type of forum and in use on lots of large community sites.

I’ve used phpBB a few times, vBulletin and XenForo are also worth looking at, but it depends on your budget and needs. They all have their strengths and weakness, but I recently moved one of my sites (https://www.dntrade.com.au/ if you want to compare to the default look) from vBulletin to XenForo and I must say - I like XenForo much more as both a user and moderator.

For me, most of the time spent on XenForo was on customising the look and feel, the docs are quite good and most settings can be tweaked using the back end. The feedback from users has been great too, which is very important to me.

Vanilla is another choice I’ve used in the past and liked. It’s a lot simpler that Discourse, vBulletin and XenForo, but if that’s all you need, it’s a good option.

In summary, if you want something simple and integration with WordPress, look at bbPress. For a simple standalone option, look at Vanilla. For something more advanced, look at XenForo or Discourse.

Hope that helps, good luck with your forum project. It’s a topic I love to talk about!

Cheers,
Chris
