Shopping Site for non techie

Hi Guys,

I’m pretty competent at designing websites based on HTML, CSS and CMS’s such as Joomla, but one of my clients has asked me to build them an eCommerce site.

I have done this a while back using Actinic, but there’s quite a hefty outlay for the licence and I suspect things have moved on a bit since then.

Can anyone recommend a good eCommerce solution that doesn’t require any real programming experience, but that can be easily customised with CSS.

To keep the cost down, an opensource solution would be ideal, but I’d consider some off the shelf solution.

Thanks in anticipation.

If you are hosting it yourself, there are free options like osCommerce, Magento and ZenCart, but I’d say they require some confidence with PHP (though I’m sure you can use them without knowing PHP). Then you need SSL certificates etc. A less intimidating option is to use a 3rd-party hosted solution like FastSpring or FoxyCart, which is easy to set up and may be all that’s needed.

Thanks Ralph, I’ll take a look at them.

My vote goes for Magento - it’s a bit complicated but you can get a really nice website using it as a CMS.

Lisa, do you need experience with PHP etc to use Magento, or is it enough to install Magento and then modify a template using HTML/CSS?

Thanks

Actually it doesn’t require some much PHP knowledge, if you need to edit just text and images. HTML and CSS will do a trick.
