Session variables with SSL between Firefox and IE8

When I come into the app, I set two session variables and then open the main page. The first thing I do is select a logon screen which uses https. As soon as I go there, Firefox sets the session variables to null while IE8 carries them through.

The urls are identical in both browsers. Why is Firefox clearing the session variables?
