Responsive image solutions

Hi Folks,

in my recent interview one of the interviewer asked a question regarding responsive design.
Q) I have an image(high resolution Ex 2000x2000) how you handle that type of images in Mobile pages loading wise while having 2G network.

I have answered:

  1. As a best practices do not recommend to use that type of huge resolution images for mobiles, apart from this if necessary will use separate image based on mobile dimensions. But he said it will take another HTTP request, don’t want that as well.
  2. To avoid HTTP request will use focal point responsive technique (or) will use some js file(like adaptive.js)

Just want to know is this a valid question, if yes then any better solution.

Didn’t understand my question please let me know.
