Opinion - Personal Website

Hi everyone.

So i started studying 5 months ago in Comunication and Multimedia.
I like both areas, that’s why i choose it.

But, in 1st year we learn more the Comunication part, we also learn photoshop, but most of the classes, we are learning about comunication.
But as lover of design, video etc… i have to do something related with that.

So, i have a little project on youtube (Gaming channel) and i created a Website a few months ago, i just installed wordpress and then i choose a template and installed plugins.
What i wanted to do, it’s start to work in a new concept of my website. Like if it was to expand my work on youtube, to have my future portfolio as well, and to publish some news about future projects.

My question is:
which is the best why to start our first website?
The previous version is just a simple wordpress template, i didn’t code or design anything.

My first ideia was to create a design in photoshop and then, code it. I’m learning html and css from codeacademy.
But my question is: Is really the best way to start? Photoshop + Code?
Second: Which is the best way? Create a design and code it, or create a template and adapt it to wordpress so i have a admin dashboard etc…

Waiting for some tips,

Thanks and sorry for my bad english

Hi ricardoc2,

I think you are best to register your own domain name. If you want to build up a portfolio which you want to increase in Google ranking you will not want to be locked into something with a wordpress.com domain.

Also Google likes content and ranks on that much more than photos and videos. If you putting up a blog then you probably want people to find you.

Also look for a niche and try to write about something that is not identical in subject matter to everyone else even if it is around a popular subject area. Try to have something unique to say.

Im not an expert in page ranking but hopefully it is of some help.

Hi, when im talk about wordpress, i mean the software, not the domain. I will have my own domain

I know many people start like that - create a design in Photoshop and then translate it to code. I prefer to start with the content, decide on a logical layout for my content and then build the design round that. I don’t make a Photoshop mockup first, although I often do quick pencil-and-paper sketches. But I don’t use WordPress, so I’m not sure how well this approach would work for that.

Take a look on this site or in your local bookstore for a good SitePoint book on Web Design/Programming, buy the book, read it cover to cover, and as you read your website will start to appear!!

Why not look here…
