Npr.og -- how do they do this?

when you’re on npr.org, when you click on a link, the whole page is like “grayed out” just before it goes to the url… conversely, when you’re on an article page, and click on NPR logo on top left to go back to home page, the same thing happens – the whole page is like grayed out before it goes to home page…

how do they do this?
(am on desktop, mac/chrome)

thank you…

It looks like it’s a single page application. You can do that with any JS framework. The forums here are built in a similar way. The greying out is just a simple transition effect.

I can’t tell which framework they are using. But, Builtwith says Backbone and WebPack.
