I want to use this font for a logo - http://www.dafont.com/edition.font But there is no license information about it. Would it be okay to use it?
I am always cautious when stuff doesn’t have the license attached, it’s always worth seeking out the foundry that produced the typeface and if required, getting permission. After all, you certainly don’t want to find yourself getting caught up in a copyright claim issue over using someone else’s property in something as identifiable as a logo. Just because the license information isn’t attached to the font itself doesn’t suddenly mean it can be used commercially.
Thanks for the welcome
The logo that I’m proposing to use this font in will be used on the web and in print. I haven’t purchased it, it’s a freely available font. However, there are certain licenses for certain free fonts, but I can’t find any license information for this one. I don’t want my client being contacted in a few weeks/months about the use of a non-commercial font if the font has a non-commercial license (which some fonts do have).
Hi decimal, welcome to SitePoint!
As far as I know, it’s fine to use a font that you have purchased in a logo. I’m happy to be proved wrong, but I’d say it’s like using a font in print.
If someone (the font author) was serious about pursuing this they should go after dafont first for distributing it without attribution to the original author or stating clearly the usage restrictions. The fact that fonts are their business speciality and there is nothing on the page would lead any reasonable person to assume there are no usage restrictions. Even the freely distributed fonts tend to have licensing restriction documents included as part of the download.
Go for it and sleep easy.
Yep, I’m just going to use it as an image, no distribution. Thanks!
But presumably the logo will just be an image? You can use fonts to make images. I think the only real problem is if you start to distribute the font itself, say as a download with your website (using @font-face, for example).
Otherwise I don’t think there’s an issue.
