Need some advice

Hi everyone, I’m new here and need some advice. I’m considering a career change to graphic design. I’ve been doing a lot of reading up on forums/blogs/whatever to get some ideas of what people who are already in the field have to say. I’ve pretty much made up my mind. I just need to get some real practice before I go ahead with it. What are some good ways to get some good practice at designing? I’ve tried my hand at some crowdsourcing sites like Elance and Witmart (I’ve had a little luck on the latter). Are those site’s good ideas or is there something better? Help, please!

p.s if you could direct me to any other forums that would be helpful to me, I’d appreciate it

I’d suggest going local. Find a church or non-profit in your community that needs a site done. You can do it pro bono and not only make a contribution, but have a live site for your portfolio.

I would also suggest putting a blog or showcase site to showcase your own talents, that way you can play around with the design and once your happy with it, you can use it to show potential customers your level of ability.

I think if you want to be a graphic designer, tutorial blog will be better helpful than forum.
