Need serious advice on Joomla upgrade

Ok everyone here is the deal,

I have an MMA site that has been running for two years now and I have the first page on google for many relevant keywords so things are picking up very fast. I get more and more traffic and I can start to see this as a profitable side project. The problem is that I installed joomla 1.5 to this site and it has been hacked a coupld of times. The good news is that I always keep weekly backups in case of this happening and I have been able to restore everything within 20 minutes tops both times I have been hacked.

Ths attacks come from random hackers looking for joomla sites to test their scripts on and I know that migrating to joomla 2.5 will help me quite a bit. The problem is that I’m facing a dilema here and I have some questions that maybe some experts will be anel to answer.

I have many articles ranked on the first page of google, but what is going to happen to those articles wen I migrate the site to 2.5?

The way joomla 2.5 displays adressed is very different from 1.5, so how will those articles not lose their rank?

Is it possible to keep the 1.5 site active in a subfolder and remove it from the root. I was thinking itwould be better to keep the 1.5 and also install the 2.5 in another subfolder leaving the root with an intro in html and redirecting to the 2.5. This way all the 1.5.26 info will remain active.

I really need some good advice here!

If you keep the URL structure the same you won’t need to do anything

Normally CMS’s will give you options as to how to display URL’s so investigate what options you have with the latest version. If you cannot keep them the same add 301 permanent redirects in your .htaccess file to inform search engines of the news addresses, any page value you have will then be kept and the engines will reindex everything in due course.

You could do but hackers may still find it. But there again there’s very little point if you’re upgrading?
