Microsoft Virtual PC has changed

i downloaded Microsoft Virtual PC almost a year ago to test my html pages in Internet Explorer 6 and 7…

now i guess IE 6 Virtual PC has expired, but for some strange reason 7 is still working. i want to make my pages look decent on IE 6 because a lot of company intranets still force there workers to use IE6

however, when i went to:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtual-pc/download.aspx

“You are not eligible to download Windows XP Mode. You must have Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate to run Windows XP Mode. To upgrade visit Windows 7 Anytime Upgrade.”

is there any way around this? i’m not a wealthy man and i don’t appreciate having to pay more when i already purchased windows 7 home premium 64bit

You want Virtual PC 2007 SP1, not that XP mode feature for Windows 7 Professional/Ultimate

And the images:

You have to manually download Windows Virtual PC separate from the XP Image that is provided on the page you tried. This is the download you want: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2B6D5C18-1441-47EA-8309-2545B08E11DD&displaylang=en Microsoft should tell people that on the page but they don’t. And yes you are allowed to run Windows Virtual PC on Windows 7 Home. The deal with “XP Mode” on that page is it gives you a licensed copy of Windows XP (along with Windows Virual PC) that is not available for anything but Professorial or Ultimate.

Use Windows Virtual PC on Windows 7, not Virtual PC 2007.

aaweome guys! thanks

thanks a lot!

i finally got the images created correctly with the Windows 7 version of Virtual PC. at first i tried to use the old one, but it wasn’t compatible with 7.

i am having a serious problem connecting to the internet though

when i double-click on “Local Area Connection” in the system tray (bottom-right) it has a red X through it and then the “Network Connections” user interface pops up.

i have 2 local area connections:
1)Local Area Connection: Network Cable unplugged Firewalled
2)Local Area Connection 2: Connected Firewalled

so the 2nd one is connected but i STILL can’t connect to the internet

once i tried disabling and then re-enabling the Local Area Connection 1 that is unplugged and then the IE7 image internet WAS working, but that doesn’t solve the problem all the time. i can’t find a CONSISTENT solution to this problem.

i am connecting to a wireless network so i don’t even understand how i fixed it when it’s definitely not the cable unplugged thing being the problem

i am asking in hopes that this is a common issue for people and i tried googling around for “virtual PC connection problem” and all the forum topics are on MAC issues.

please help

i’m beginning to think that it just takes about 5 or 10 minutes of waiting to get the images’ to connect to my wireless network.

is anyone else having issues with the Windows 7 Virtual PC and the IE7 and IE6 images connecting to the internet using a wireless network?
