Marquee tag

Remember, the original stock tickers were TeleType machines that printed on or punched a paper tape. While the tapes were punched more or less continuously, they were read in sections held in the hands; not moving.

Sure, but nowadays they scroll along the bottom of the television set.

Though in 99% of cases I think it’s a special form of decoration for the channel rather than something actually useful : )

You can build functionality into a JavaScript marquee to make it easy to start and stop it. Perhaps a start/stop button next to or under the marquee.

no, i cannot – you maybe can, but i cannot

and i sure as shootin can’t do it on somebody else’s web page

Well you could if they were using JavaScript to implement the marquee since you can always either add JavaScript of your own that turns theirs on and off if you are using a decent browser such as Opera or Firefox simply click on the enable/disable JavaScript option to start and stop it.

Perhaps I should upate myJavaScript “to do” list to add writing a userscript that allows the browser owner to add their own start/stop button to web pages with JavaScript animations (since it is easier to start and stop all the animations in the page than it is to try to specifically target a marquee).

I’ll definitely add a start/stop button to the JavaScript marquee scripts that I make available for people to use.

As per your saying that stock ticker were tele type machines, in the same way earlier computer was invented only for the computing purpose.

But now see the wide horizon of computer technology.

We can’t stick with the old ways or working or rules always. We should have to adapt with the new technologies and should use it to maximum.

While stock ticker was a mere example. I’ve seen many a news sites’ are using the scrolling bar for highlighting the latest and breaking news. Some food recipe site are using in their side bar, (moving upward) for their today’s menu and special dish. And examples are numerous.

If we’l go little deeper, then now a days we can see Amazon’s like widget in which always a product is scrolling either by mouse over or automatically.

But that doesn’t seem bad. many a photo album site are using that.

Yeah that is done not by (html)marquee, rather than with javascript and now in modern days with jQuery or Mootools or some other javascript framework.

But it has some usability all I want to say.

That’s “TeleType”, a brand name. TeleType machines were cutting edge technology, obviously superseded by more modern methods. Do understand that while methods have improved, the function is the same as today’s Twitter, text messaging, IMs, PMs or even the internet. The early computers used TeleType machines as their console, or terminal. That we now use graphical interfaces does not change the needs of the user for usable, accessible output. You might notice the keyboard is still with us.

Where information is constantly being updated, a scroll is not a bad thing IF you can pause the scroll to actually read the info. Your recipe site reference is simply silly. That info is not in an update stream; it is effectively static, even if it is changed daily, or even hourly.

Some user activated scroll or switching out of content is not even remotely related to a marquee action. Please stay on topic.

You are so enamored of moving script, why did you post your query? Were you looking to find validation, only to find none? Why do you argue for a discredited method?

Yeah, it is not particularly useful. One either keeps up with the reader or the scroll. Then, there’s the crap all around the screen with their own headlines. It’s definitely a case of “I can cram more onto my screen than the other channels”.
