<marquee> Broken on Chrome

Hello Good Folks,

My marquee seems fine on other browsers, but with Chrome there’s a serious flaw. The marquee consists of numerous blockquotes that scroll up. Chrome does this fine, but places a huge gap above the initial quote. My guess is that Chrome is misinterpreting the scrolldelay attribute.

Any suggestions?

The page is http://www.drumdr.com/about-drum-repair.html

The style follows:

marquee {
margin-top: 2em;
margin-bottom: 2em;
}

Then the HTML:

                    <marquee behavior = "scroll" direction="up" scrolldelay = "500" >

				 I highly recommend Dr. Tom for his exceptional work on hand drums. I've recommended him to
                                     students, drum circle participants and to fellow professional percussionists many times over
                                     the years, and he has always delivered top-notch work, always within the time frame he
                                     suggested, and always with a professional and upbeat attitude.

				Thanks Doc for providing such a great service to the drumming community!

                        As I have examined and played my drum since I received it, I thought about . . . the concept of kaizen, continuous
                        improvement. . . . The drum's tones are pure. The ropes are not twisted. The final trim of the skin is straight and matched
                        to the curve of the rest of the head. There are no loose or ragged edges. It demonstrates the pride you take in your work.
                        You are a real craftsman and artist who takes pride in his work. These are djembes that will be pounded by elementary school
                        students, but they look like drums suited for professional musicians.

<marquee> was never a standard element, so you can’t rely on any browser rendering it as you intend.

See https://www.w3.org/wiki/HTML/Elements/marquee

If you really need this to scroll, then JS is probably the way to go, although personally I’d rather be in control of scrolling text like this, so I can scroll/read at my own speed.

There is also a number of validation errors on the page, some of which relate to the marquee element.

Another option is css animation.

You can set a height on the marquee and then it will scroll properly in chrome. Otherwise it assumes you want to scroll from the whole height of the content.

<marquee behavior="scroll" direction="up" scrolldelay="500" height="150">

However, as others have said this tag is obsolete and you should use other methods including css animation.

I did try that in Chromium with the Inspect tool, it did limit the height but it didn’t make the marquee content come closer to the top so the wait for it to show was the same (too long).

Just tested with the same result in Google Chrome, Linux 54.0.2840 64-bit.

Maybe the cause is that the Inspect tool stubbornly insisted on also adding an extra style attribute with the height same as the height attribute?

Frustrating, but the Inspect tool uses not the original source but what the browser has interpretated as the code.

(I agree with @TechnoBear that the normal scroll would be better for the user (me). )

Yes TB, I was aware of this when I decided to go with but checked the top three or four browsers at the time to make sure it rendered well. It’s possible I neglected to check Chrome.

I also would prefer to read at my own pace. Perhaps I can go with a drop down. Or is there a better option?

Thanks S, for reminding me to check my markup now and then. I think the validation errors related to are due to it being udefined, as was pointed out.

There is a current discussion on ways of showing/hiding more text, which might be of interest to you.

I often find it a bit aggravating when something scrolls and I can’t “pause” it.

I haven’t seen much scrolling text on sites lately, but I have seen a lot of sliders.

It seems odd to me that a site would have a slider with panels like “Benefits”, “Our Team”, “Price Plans” etc. each with a paragraph of text and that scroll out of view when I haven’t finished reading them yet.

If you want me to see the greatness, let me see the greatness for goodness sake !

No it doesn’t work on the inspector as I guess the browser is working out the height of the content at runtime and not when attributes are added. I originally thought it was not working until I tried a live version and saw that it did indeed compute the correct height of the block and start scrolling from the bottom immediately. :slight_smile:

Yes that annoys me to and that can be avoided with the css animation techniques as you can pause the animation on hover if needed (animation-play-state:paused;).

Just for fun !! :slight_smile:

Here’s a css example that should work in IE11 plus other modern browsers and fallback to an ordinary overflow div for older browers.

It’s a bit choppy inside codepen but much smoother outside. (I also added a hack for ie11 which I found a little distasteful.)

Edit:

Why have codepens stopped embedding properly?

Where would I find that TB?

The height attribute does indeed make it work the way I intended. Thank you.

I’ll probably stick with this fix until I can look into some of the other suggestions, like animation.

Thanks, @Mittineague. Yes, I was.

@jcmcobra - sorry, I thought I’d posted the link. I must have got distracted.
