Locked layers in photoshop

Im trying to unlock my background layer and its not working. The padlock icon is gray, so I can click on it. If I go to the Layer Menu, I cant click on anything. I cant see my transform tools to adjust the size of an image even though the show transform controls box is checked. Feels like everything is locked, please help!!

You can’t edit the background layer like other layers. Duplicate it, then edit the duplicated layer and hide the background one.

I’m not sure why it’s locked or if there is any other way around it (I’m not a Photoshop pro), but that’s is what I do.

If running the full version of Photoshop just double click the background layer to unlock it.

I have tried that too before and it doesnt work, I cant select or click anything to do with layers. I need to be able to use my transform tools too

Are you sure there’s no lock symbol next to the layer icon?

@mawburn is correct, you shouldn’t edit the first layer, you should duplicate it. Your Photoshop history only goes back so far. If your initial layer is locked, there should be a lock image on that layer. To unlock this layer, hold on down the "alt" key and double click on the lock icon. This should unlock the layer.
