How to center a rectangle in the canvas in Photoshop?

Hello,
I’m beginning to play with Photoshop (I’ve been used Fireworks for years) and I’m stuck with a simple operation: how to center a shape (i.e. a rectangle) in the canvas? With Fireworks it’s a breeze: select your shape, go to “Align” panel and click on a couple of buttons… With Photoshop seems a nightmare: am I missing something?

Thanks

Photoshop doesn’t align things well. Maybe because its really intended for manipulating images rather than design. Still a lot of people use it for design. Using the guides helps.

I found another tip:

  1. In the Layers panel, select both “background” and shape’s layer
  2. Select the Move Tool
  3. Now the “Align” icons in the toolbar are activated and you can use them to align the shape to the canvas
    It’s a bit un-intuitive comparing to Fireworks, but that’s it…

Photoshop is more for manipulating pixels the shape tools are not that impressive that’s when you need Illustrator.
