How much should you charge a small business for their domain name?

I happen to own a domain name of small business because two companies operating in different states had the same company name. Now that I am no longer using it, I would like to sell it to the other company operating under the hyphenated version. The question is, what should I charge them for it? I don’t want to gouge a small business owner but, I would like to compensated so… what to do?

The domain in question is coburnconstruction.com but, the question is a more general one for others in the future. What should you charge for nameRealEstate(.com), nameCleaners(.com), or nameDesign(.com).

Thanks in advance.

I think it’s more up to how much they are willing to offer you for it. Some could care less if their domain matches there name. I care however. So some would be willing to pay a lot for it. Some would not. The most I would pay in order to have my domain match is a few hundred bucks. Save you energy. I tried the domain sale biz and it was a complete bust.

Thanks for your feedback.

I’m not looking to get into the domain name biz. I just happen to have the domain already and they happen to want it.

I agree with this.

I don’t have much experience in this area, but a company probably wouldn’t let themselves be gouged on a domain name. Offer it to them for what you think is a nice sum of money, if they say no ask them how much they would be willing to pay, then bring your original closer to that. (haggle)

You’ll probably be surprised to find out that they may actually not even want it, since they have already branded themselves with the dash version.

The price of anything is only what someone is willing to pay for it, we all know that.

The question here is, what should an educated small business owner be willing to pay to secure their company’s exact match domain name.

Picnic said “a few hundred” – we’ll call his guesstimate $400.

Anyone else?

If you’re only looking for a few hundred bucks, offer it to them at minimum $1500 first. I mean, this shouldn’t be much money to even a small business for something as important as a domain. You’re talking about less than the price of a couple computers.

Hell I recently watched a domain expire hoping to buy it, only to see it snatched up by a Domain farm and priced at $7k. It really wasn’t even a very good name, 3 words and 12 characters, but I liked it. I was kinda bummed :frowning: I should have offered the original owner $250 like I had planned.

This is what I am trying to avoid. If I let this thing expire someone is going to try and gouge this guy. I wish everyone would take the time to negotiate a private sale rather than let some hoarder scoop it up and hold it for ransom.

We settled on $360 – his first offer – I didn’t haggle (because it wasn’t insulting). I’m trying to do the right thing here, I only wish others would do the same.

Glad everyone is happy.

Of course. But you also have to think that what’s considered “a reasonable happy amount” varies greatly. I don’t think there is any shame in get the most you can for something as long as you’re not exploiting a need or a weakness.
