Does anyone here REALLY care about the Royal Wedding?

I’m genuinely interested in both the national and international view of the Royal Wedding in the United Kingdom. Is anyone on here having a street party? Who’s going to watch it on TV? Has anyone kept up with all the coverage thus far, or have any opinions on how the media has portrayed this event?

Personally, and I fully understand if anyone is against this opinion, I think the Royals are largely okay, but the media has thrown this entire event out of proportion in order to stave people away from issues like the recession, the severe cuts in the UK and voting reforms. According to broadcasters there will be millions of street parties and we’re all itching to find out more about the wedding, and that is what’s making me sick about the wedding.

I, personally, couldn’t care less and I will not watch it on TV unless I don’t have anything else to do (and I’m sure that I will have something to do, I always have :D) and I didn’t find anything more interesting on TV or DVD. So chances that I will see any of it are slim.

I haven’t heard much of this as I don’t watch TV and I don’t read newspapers very often but it must be huge if someone like me, that doesn’t pay attention to the news, have heard any of it

Haven’t said that, any excuse is good to have a street party and since for once you will be allowed to do so, it is not a bad idea

I have to say, I couldn’t care less. I love weddings and all that they entail but I have absolutely zero interest in the royal family. I appreciate that they have historical value and bring in tourist $ but I am all for NZ becoming a republic.

I’m pissed they haven’t invited me, therefore I’m boycotting it. :stuck_out_tongue:

Obviously a lot of people are interested in an event like this, and that’s quite fair enough, but I wish more people could see how much of the hype and excitement is generated by people with a profit motive. Maybe people can see that but don’t care. Anyhow, I guess it does no harm. (Well, maybe …)

Up until recently, I had no interest in watching the event, but now I’m torn, because we have a bunch of very cheeky young men on TV here in Australia (called the Chasers) who are going to do a running commentary on the event—clearly with the aim of taking the p!ss out of it. Now that’s something I’d enjoy.

Nope. I have little interest in (famous) people I don’t know personally. Beyond that, it’s just trivia facts.

Um, there is one in the works I’m guessing?

In the words of Johnny Depp
“I try to remain in as profound a state of ignorance as possible”

Stay under your rock, put a finger in each ear, and cry “la la la la la la” as loudly as you can for the next week. That should keep you safe.

Sound advice!

Wake me when it’s over.

TBH, I think you need cryogenics for that. The last royal wedding I watched was 30 years ago, and the drama that unfolded from that still hasn’t petered out. :shifty:

The only difference between the drama in a neighbor’s family and the drama in a royal family is that only one of them gets broadcast to every TV, magazine, newspaper, and radio program in the world.

I am fine with monarchies (even though we threw out one just a few years back). However, I couldn’t care less about these royal weddings just as most of you could not. I don’t understand why BBC has just turned into a tabloid media. Why should we fuss about where the new couple should go to for their honeymoon ?

The royal family is a symbol of the UK, similar to the way the office of the president of the USA is to the USA. I’m sure that goes for any nation with any sort of national pride in their leaders or national symbols–a common rallying point that everyone in the nation knows of and can relate to in some way.

I understand that. A reasonable level of celebration is certainly desirable. But I think media is going a little overboard here. My slight quibble is with the excessive brouhaha over their very private affair.

I’ll probably see it on TV because that’s all that will be on the News but I won’t be taking time off work to see the thing live. I’ve seen a lot of houses locally with Union Jack flags adoring the windows, etc.

They were saying on the news this morning it’s reckoned there could be around 2 billion people around the world watching it on TV!

O the shallowness of humanity! We are doomed. :frowning:

I heard news on TV, but this news is interesting for me.

People miss worshiping monarchs.

I would agree that it is getting blown out of proportion. It’s great theat they’re going to wed, but it doesn’t consume my every thought. I suppose it is a fantastic distraction from all the unrest in the middle east and the economic down-turn, but I’d rather put my positive energy close to home.
