Compression e.g. gzip not supported

Hello there

I wanted to turn on compression module for @fontface as advised in DesignWeek podcast recently “When using @font-face for self-hosted files, we need to take into account two particular technical issues: one of them is subsetting and the other one is compression”.

My hosting provider said though they provide access to .htaccess override they ‘do not suport any kind of compression’.

Has anyone got any hints or tips on this? Is this usual for hosting provider and how can I test how much longer the pages take to load using @fontface without compression?

Thanks!

Other than swapping host to one that’s less limiting and a bit more proactive, you might want to consider serving the font file off of a host such as amazon s3. If you pre gzip the file and use cloudberry or similar transfer app you can set http headers to serve as compressed.

Hello

I checked with another host - hostgator - who say in their support forum they also don’t support gzip_mod. Does anyone know a host that does?

In the meantime I’ll check out s3 and cloudberry…

Thanks:)

I think bluehost have mod_gzip on their servers though best to check with them.

Thanks for that- I checked with bluehost they have mod_deflate instead of mod_gzip which should achieve the same thing.

I do not know what kind of budget you have but I believe if you get that running on the VPS (small one) you will be able to do what you need.
Everyhting depends how critical for you such compression.
