Can I have (or need) mail ssl certs per domain (on the same server)?

I’ve got a whole bunch of domains on my server, and ssl certs on a couple of them.

Do I need an ssl cert specifically for mail.[domainname] for each one that I send mail from, or is the ssl for [domainname] sufficient? (It’s not a wildcard cert).

My hosts said that “Only one certificate for mail may be installed at a time”. Is this right? Does this mean that mail for domain2 will be using the cert for domain1? Won’t this give warnings when I connect?
