Can I download images from Facebook?

Sports pictures are always available on Facebook. The fan pages use images from here and there without taking care of copyright infringement. Can I download images by asking the Facebook page admin? I know they have copied it from somewhere too but this isn’t my concern. Right? I am asking the one who uploaded it.
I want to use this for my blog.
Thankx

Of course it’s your concern. If you use a copyright image without permission of the copyright holder you could be prosecuted. Simples!

A person who has used a copyrighted image on their site without permission does not have the right to then turn around and give you permission to use that image. It is still infringing on copyright laws.

And, indeed, even if they have been granted permission to use it on their own page, they cannot grant permission for you to use it. Only the holder of the copyright can do that.

What are the chances that the owner of the image will find out about a website (out of a billion websites) that is using his image?

Not as remote a possibility as some may think.

TinEye is a reverse image search engine. Search by image: Give it an image and it will tell you where the image appears on the web.

IMHO a more important question is how prepared is one to pay legal fees if they don’t ensure use of an image is allowed.

^ what Mitt says
and also theft is theft whether you get caught or not.

If you did get caught would you expect a cease notification and only court action if you did not comply to the request?

I imagine most are generous and go the take down route first even if they are entitled to more severe action.

An exception might be if the owner experienced financial loss as a result of the theft in which case they might pursue compensation for damages.

From what I know of some artists when they find their work used elsewhere, the thief receives a demand for royalty payment and a cease notification.

It will be your concern…Try to find free image anyway.I think a lot of service out there provide it…

If you download any image from Facebook or any other source, it may or may not be an original photograph source.
If you are sure that the image is from an original source, downloading the picture and posting it on your blog with a link or description of the image source would actually help in ranking of your blog.

How?
If you do not have the creator’s permission to use the image, you could be in trouble legally.

Seriously? You’re recommending the use of stolen content as a good way to gain ranking?

I actually meant that in case if you are taking image from Facebook it is always important to mention the link source in case if you do not have the information about the copyright of the image. However, the better option would be to go for the royalty free images. Reason being on Facebook it is not always easy to find out the copyright information of the image. And if the information is not obtained then as mentioned above there can be issues with the use of image.

If you don’t have copyright information for the image, you should not be using it. The holder of the copyright needs to grant permission for you to use the image. They can do that on an individual basis, or by posting on a site which explicitly allows images to be reused, but without that permission you may not use the image.

Very interesting, didn’t know about this tool.

Google Images also has reverse image search. Click the camera icon in the search field.

I recommend you to look for copyright free images. There are many websites where you can find such pictures. In my opinion it’s a risk to download picture from facebook without knowing who holds the rights for it.

Of course you can as long as you ask permission from the FB admin like you said and get a positive reply from them… Once you have their go signal, don’t forget to include credits where you got your pictures…
