Buying Premium Domain and Redirecting to Main Site or Building Landing Page?

Hi guys,
Apologize if this has been answered or explained but I’d love some feedback. We have a construction company and we service two major areas in Canada and are curious about the best SEO practice for this. We have our company domain obviously with the website built, pages optimized and such but would like to focus on some certain keywords for these areas specifically and came across some premium domains that we’d love to grab.

I am debating on purchasing a premium domain name for one area and building a small one page design and optimizing it for this specific area with content, contact information and such and then having buttons link to sections on my company website for that area.

Is this the best approach for this? Or am I really competing with myself here with having essentially two different websites? Is buying the premium domain and just redirecting it to my main site a better idea? Just trying to learn the ropes here. I have design/development experience but am just diving into SEO and Internet Marketing so I am a bit stuck.

Any help or feedback is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi Mike,

First, could you explain what you mean by a “premium domain name”? I’m not familiar with the concept.

I am debating on purchasing a premium domain name for one area and building a small one page design and optimizing it for this specific area with content, contact information and such and then having buttons link to sections on my company website for that area.

That’s not a good strategy. It would be better to concentrate on optimising your main site. The only benefit I can see in having a separate domain is if the domain name itself contains some of the keywords that you are optimising for. (Is that what you mean by a “premium domain name”?). But even in that case, the benefits would be small. The actual domain name is just one of many signals that search engines use in their ranking algorithms, and there’s no evidence that it is a particularly strong one.

Furthermore, if visitors succeed in finding your one-page site, they will then have the extra step of clicking through to the main site. In general, you’ve got to make it as easy as possible for visitors to find the information they need, and this is not the way to do that. Plus, showing two different domain names might confuse visitors, and detract from any branding that is contained in the main domain name.

Is buying the premium domain and just redirecting it to my main site a better idea?

If you really feel you must have the new domain name, doing a redirect is a lot better than relying on visitors to click through. But it still lacks any substantial benefit.

I would suggest you forget this strategy, and instead use your time and energy on improving and optimising your main site.

Mike

Thanks for your response. I should have clarified. By “premium domain” I mean the domains that have our keyword phrase in the domain. GoDaddy has labeled these as “Premium” as per this definiton:

“Premium Domain Names are more valuable than other domains because they are based on common words or phrases people often use in their online searches.”

The idea was for the landing page to either have links that go directly to our company site, or a contact form on that domain with contact information on how to get a hold of us. Somewhat like a landing page/one page advertisement of sorts.

Thank you for taking the time to respond, I appreciate all the help and guidance!
