my hosting company is wanting to charge me for having an antispam filter on the servers to prevent all the spam Im getting. Is this usual? What are the normal costs you would expect for this feature?
That’s unusual, Unless they are going to set you up with some 3rd party application such as Postini.
Im getting a bit of spam - maybe 10 a day. I asked the hosting company what I could do and they said they have an antispam filter which would cost $69/year.
I believe that depends on the spam activity. Are they going to change you for that?

If the software is costing them money (it isn’t free software), then they must charge you. In theory, if this is managed hosting, and you’re adding new software that you want them to support, it also means an increased cost for them (thought not too great of an increase).
