123-Reg service outage

123-Reg is a major hosting company in the UK, and yet this seems to be passing with very little comment, which surprises me.

I don’t use them, but if I did, I would want to know exactly what went wrong, and what steps they’ve taken to prevent a recurrence.

I wonder how the hosting company was able to go in and delete what I presume were entire hosting accounts on the server selectively?

The hosting company had better have great backups in place

The VPS section of their site says:

DATA BACKUPS
Protect your valuable data from the risk of corruption or data loss with our optional scheduled backups.

Optional? I do hope they have more than that…

(But then I’m paranoid about losing data; even my backups generally have backups. )

The master versions of all my websites are on my laptop, with a cloud and USB backup.

I imagine it wasn’t selective… remember it’s not just one server. Multiple VPS per server, but multiple servers too. Probably many, many servers, if it’s a big enough company (I’m not familiar).

And the articles on it seem to indicate that maybe there wasn’t backup… or that that failed too. Regardless, they’re suggesting that users restore from their own backups, at any rate.

Or they mounted them, so they weren’t true offsite backups… is this whole thing starting to sound more and more like the hoax that just occurred? Yup.

I’ll bet they wish it were. Apparently they’ve closed their chat support service this afternoon to concentrate on dealing with the fallout from this - and that’s tthree days after it occurred.

Oh, it sure seems legit, but man it feels very coincidental considering it was just in the news that someone else did it! I mean seriously… how could one not be more precautious after reading of the hoax?

It does seem to reek of extreme carelessness, especially for such a large company.
