"Added to that frustration is the fact that, for readers to comment (and remember: commenting is the currency of the blogosphere), they must register an account with blogger or be satisfied commenting as 'Anonymous'. I typically recommend users avoid Blogger."

Not anymore. They allow you to comment as "Other." Example: http://www.blogger.com/comment.g?blogID=11022879&postID=111202756495075696

About Blogger and corporate networks:

The ease with which one can start a Blogger blog is the problem here. It takes literally seconds to start a new blog, so lots of people use them as a way to create easy links to their porn sites. Since content-filtering systems on corporate networks are usually very (read: TOO) aggressive, it's hard to view a Blogger blog while at work (which, coincidentally, are usually the hours when a blogger will see his/her highest traffic levels).

Commenting as "Other" is no better than commenting as "Anonymous". If you are trying to network with other blogs, a point I was trying to convey as crucial, not being able to network with your name and URL is not acceptable to me.

I am a freelance web developer, and a client of mine has expressed an interest in starting a "CEO Blog", which they would like to be integrated into their website.

I am considering whether to customise an existing piece of blogging software, or write one from scratch. Any suggestions?

Existing blog software is highly customisable and should be more than adequate unless your client wants spectacular CMS-like features, so unless the client specifically requests it then writing a blog engine from scratch would probably not be the best use of your time and his money.

I know there is a ton of software alternatives out there, but as a first time blogger I was extremely happy with Serendipity - http://www.s9y.org/

Some hosting companies offer a service called Fantastico which will install some blogging scripts on your server account with just a few mouse clicks.

I was able to install WordPress with no problems in a matter of minutes.

So, if you're looking for a host, this might be a consideration.

A problem using Fantastico to install a program is that many hosts do not always keep the most up-to-date script. Plus you should take manual actions to secure sensitive directories and configuration files.

Good article. I'm going to print it out and post it on my wall.
