Ive had business cards go both ways. I think it depends on the size of the information you are putting on the card. Either way works well.
Definatley simple is better. IMO the card should not be made to sell your products/services…when you hand over a business card you should have already done the selling. The business card should simply be a contact card with an outline of your services. The quicker it is to read the better.
If you think you need heaps of info on the card to sell your business your going about it the wrong way.
It think it depends on the business, for a businessy type business I would create horizontal. That it would be clear and simple is a no brainer.
Though, I’m about to create some for myself and I’m pretty sure I will be making it vertical, it instantly sets you apart becuase it’s not very common.
I’m going to have to go with horizontal-- and as minimalistic as possible. Fancy fonts aside I think the most professional cards I’ve ever seen are set up as Name, Business, Phone, Fax, with perhaps a short line describing the company’s purpose or slogan underneath the business line.
I prefer vertical because it makes you take notice of the card. Most people have horizontal and I like to be different, not same old thing as the next person.

When I was in art school (1998-2002) I heard from a few different professors that horizontal was the way to go, mostly because of how people stored business in those Roladex things. Now, I wonder if that logic still applies. I can’t tell you the last time I saw someone with a Roladex on their desk. Most people have business card books or other storage boxes.
I don’t think either way is necessarily right or wrong. It’s just personal preference.
They both really carry the same way but the horizontal has the advantage that it has the same orientation as all other things of same size a person carries around, like drivers license, credit cards, all sorts of identification and membership cards. So it is a natural to want to look at a business card the same way, it is just more habit than all else, but that is a reason to stick with it, to make it easy and not annoying to the potential client.
Hello! )) Yes, 1:3- is an ideal format for the viewing by two horizontally ))) located eyes. But the next nearer eyes-friendly format is a horizontal business card. All sense is in 2 eyes, both of which capture information simultaneously. ) Horizontal text and images are more natural physiologically for us.)) Thank you!
I have just tried to convert my personal business card to a vertical, and I am certain it will appeal to other groups as well as current.
I keep going back to where I stick the contact information, a horizontal card gives me the space however. Squashing contact details is a bit of a no no to me. Am I just old fashioned do you think?
My business card is vertical on the front and horizontal on the back. I think that with some clients it is really good to be a bit different but with others they get a bit confused.
I was going to get the top left hand corner rounded off, to make it that little bit different. But the printing costs would have been loads more and I was just starting up at the time so it put me off
