I would say building slow or building fast is relative to the sites page count, viral ability and other factors. So I could never suggest that someone “builds fast” or “builds slow”. You should build at a velocity that is maintainable for the site but also provides real value.
If you are going for volume then you are doing SEO in a negative way
Link building should be always natural, you should not concentrate on only do follow links, there should be a combination of both do and no follow links. There are many popular no follow sites which give good amount of traffic for the websites.
Aren’t “building” and “natural” a contradiction in terms, an oxymoron?
