Photoshop or Fireworks

TechnoBear, do I remember you saying you use Ubuntu?

You do indeed. (And therefore GIMP, if that’s your next question. ;))

Mind reader

How do you find working with GIMP for day to day web related stuff (e.g. resizing an image, cutting something out)?
I ask, because I’m slowly contemplating switching to Linux for good and an image manipulation program has always been one of the sticking points in the past.

I have no problems with it, although I don’t do much fancy graphics work. I use it a lot for resizing - either scaling an image or cropping (a rectangular) area of a jpeg - and similar straightforward stuff. I’ve also used it on occasion to cut out irregular shapes and been pleased with the results - especially considering I don’t do that kind of thing too often, so I’m not that well practised.

The one thing I did miss when I initially moved from Windows was an easy way to batch-create thumbnails, for which I’d been using Irfanview. Apparently, it’s possible to do in Image Magick, but I’ve yet to get round to learning that. :o I guess if I had to do it more often, I’d have more of an incentive to learn.

Good to know. Thanks.
I have lots more questions about moving to Linux, but I won’t hijack this thread any further.

I wonder who knows about Imagemagick on this forum?

I used to use Gimp and was happy with it but when I updated my PC I found a not to be missed deal on photoshop - not that I use it very much.

Gimp has a few I suppose problems is not the word for it but to work with RAW files you need to install UFRAW and to work with Liquid rescale you have to install something else.

What I like about photoshop is the brush to change exposure etc. which was not available on GIMP.

Out of interest I have Imagemagick installed on my windows PC and have an Icon/batch file I just drag and drop photos over to resize, add borders or whatever else I want to do with them.

I have stuck with Windows as I could never get the hand of Linux - I suppose I have been using windows so long I am used to it. I also came from the time that if you wanted to install a modem or something on Linux it took 2 or 3 hours!

That kind of seems like Linux. Mostly it works just great, but if you want to do anything that is outside of the norm, you’ve got to enjoy configuring your PC to do so and this can sometimes be a bit hit or miss.

PhotoShop is undeniably great. One feature that recently blew me away was the content aware fill.

Snap. I have gone back to Linux as my main operating system several times over the last thirteen years, but every time I have run up against something that has frustrated me (e.g. no support for three monitors due to proprietary graphic card drivers), so reverted to Windows.

However, I am currently getting so fed up with WIndows (especially Windows 8) that I am planning to have another go at switching.
