The table has 4 columns now, and I want 8 columns, without changing the table height.

Changing the number of columns will not affect the height of the table. Changing the number of rows or the height of the contents of the cells will change the height of the table. Perhaps you need to clarify what you want.

Ok, here’s a single table version with horizontal scroll that uses one line of jquery to create the fixed side column. I’ve only just knocked this up a few minutes ago so needs testing.
