How many hours do you spend working in vs working on your business?

I think time for management is directly proportional to working time because if you keep things manage then you can easily handle and finish work according to managed things

The timing of the post is quite uncanny really!

For the first time in a long time, today I spent all day (8hrs) working ON my business. I updated my site, got in touch with people to organise some networking opportunities. I must say though that this is the first time in a long time that I’ve taken a step away from things. The way business has been at the moment, I’ve had to spend all my time doing the work. And working mostly on my own, I have the honour of being CEO / accountant / caretaker / teagirl.

30 to 35 hours in working a week here as the internet business is automated it just need to provide sales and support related answers.

Well, I spend about 95% of my time working on my business and 5% doing billable work as it stands right now.

Though, this is the first time in my life I can say that. In the past, it’s been more of a 50/50 ratio.

The reason it’s like this right now is because I am currently in the startup phase on two different businesses simultaneously. One being a web development consulting company and the other being a record label (although admittedly unrelated). If I didn’t have the financial means to maintain my lifestyle and the two startups without income it would be near impossible to do so little billable work.

Interesting question! I’m a freelancer and I would honestly say it’s about 50/50. I always reserve time to keep my knowledge up-to-date (I’m a big fan of podcasts, reading, etc) and apart from spending time on here (which I put time aside for) I’ve been working on expanding my business beyond my clients (I do a lot of freelance writing at the moment too along with a piece of software I’ve gotten in the works). Much of my current work schedule is a blur… Sometimes I’m designing, sometimes I’m writing, sometimes I’m developing, sometimes I’m learning, sometime’s I’m contributing elsewhere.

I spend 90% managing the business and 10% actually doing billable work. Range is 20 to 45 hours per week, about 45 weeks/year.

Really I spend a lot of my time dealing with customers, I’d say 50% another 30% is spent working on projects and so forth and the remaining time I have left in the week is spent on administrative issues. Luckily my partner handles a lot of the admin stuff which gives me more time to focus on work.

I don’t spend nearly as much time as I’d like on growing the business.

8 hour days don’t exist do they. lol. Once I started working for myself “work hours” become a thing of the past. Now all hours of the day can be work hours is need be.

What type of work do you do exactly Sagewing? I’m guessing it’s a little different to most of the web designers and developers on the forums

Sad to say, I still work on a weekend. It’s tough but it’s fine with me because I am learning a lot, and I apply what I’ve learned on my client’s task to our own online business. Basically that’s a win win situation to both parties.

Yeah I spend probably 95% of my term doing the work and only manage to spend about 5% actually working on growing the business.

I work 50-60 hours a week doing online tasks, I know I work too hard, I just got used to it. Most of them covers SEO jobs.
