Yes you can do it in a couple of ways as seen in a recent Sitepoint thread.
For more intricate styling you can hide the checkbox and just style the label instead.
Remember to not interfere with accessibility and allow keyboard users to tab through as in my example. Some of these checkbox tutorials don’t cater for tabbing or focus styles properly.
