Mega-menus do provide better navigation options, I've seen them on many websites, and some of them seem really nice.

Thanks for the post.

Liking the mega-menus - I think if you have the right kind of content it works very well, and that overview of content is very user friendly and time-saving for e-commerce sites :)

Will,

You say: "Since my site is php powered, I can also generate menu contents on-the-fly!"

Could you please give the url of your site?

Microsoft has had these menus on microsoft.com and msdn.com for close to 10 years now. It became a necessity for them considering the huge array of information they are trying to publish for developers, and number of subsites they have from their main home page.

I think next web design trend will be dam good.
-The homepage should include a summary of what products
your site has to offer. Customers can always delve deeper
into your site for more information.

Thanks for the article. I think they're not as magical as the article claims, but I actually think I found a way to handle a rather large site I manage a little more effectively (assuming I can tame the accessibility issues).

Jacob Nielsen writes about menu which appears after hover. How about ones which appear only when you click on the menu element?

What do you think?

I've been using pure CSS Flyout / Dropdown Menus successfully for some time, which display perfectly in ALL modern browsers including IE6. I got the basic tricks from Stu Nicholls website: <a href="http://www.cssplay.co.uk/menus/" rel="nofollow">cssplay</a>.

Since they work fine, multi-level, as flyouts or dropdowns, whereby each level can be styled separately, I personally see little need to sacrifice accessibility and move to JS Mega-Menus, except perhaps for the latency effect. One could still add a JS latency to Stu's menues and they would still work in degrading mode, just without latency. I have done something similar by adding a color flow to the background of the menu slots on mouseover, german speakers can read more and download it here: <a href="http://www.timreeves.de/webtechnik/colorflow.php" rel="nofollow">colorflow</a>

Menus not working when scripting is disabled is the best-practise approach. You degrade back to plain links which lead to sub-index pages that list the content which was available from the submnues.

Acccessibility does not necessarily mean that everything is available to everyone; it's about providing *equivalence*, not equality.
