So when you say it was “a good idea” you mean it was “beneficial to their commercial agenda”, rather than being a good idea in the wider sense (of which there may be many interpretations, both good and bad)

awhile, however, is most definitely a word.

I often use the latter, but never the former. Though I may have used it wrong by placing it after a preposition (in). Is it really a big deal either way? (Also, a spell check wouldn’t catch a minor grammar mistake, if I have indeed made one.)

Why is it that I want to punch people in the face when they write “awhile” or “alot”? Why is it that I can’t take people seriously when they make a mistake that could easily be caught by a spell checker? Why is it that seemingly millions of people have adopted a spelling mistake that makes no fucking sense? How do you write “a short while” in your world? Is it “ashortwhile”?

I couldn’t agree more with the conclusions of this post. I know of a few webmasters that rely on Google news to syndicate their content to bring in traffic and returned interest for their niche sites, and it works handsomely for them.

The other side to this is that full news sites aren’t really all that good for RSS, or are they? I had a couple of them in my Opera feed reader and after a while it just becomes overwhelm. However, after I swapped them over to widget form in my netvibes account I found that more manageable, and I use netvibes much like a regular newspaper website, except I have feeds coming in from worldwide newspapers.

That’s once instance where RSS works just as it should, to mash-up content from multiple sources into one place for the reader. I can’t say I read everything that comes in, but I sure do visit those sites more often because I visit with purpose, coming from a link that interested me. I think pre-RSS it would’ve been unlikely I’d visit all such news sites once a month, or even remember to do so. RSS pays in the long term.

The decision to turn off RSS by Agence France-Presse (AFP) is nothing short of short-sightedness.
